Abstract: In the era dominated by neoliberalism and consumerism, the phenomenon of “keeping up with the Joneses” emerges as a competitive behavioral pattern that has detrimental effects on individual, familial, and social dimensions. This research takes a macro perspective to examine effective cognitive strategies for preventing and reducing the phenomenon of social comparison through a library-documentary method and a descriptive-analytical approach. The findings indicate that “comparison” is a fundamental component in the process of this phenomenon. Accordingly, cognitive strategies for escaping the pressure of keeping up with the Joneses are presented in three sections: strategies for self-preparation (distraction, reflection, determination, and hope), strategies for regulating the components of the “comparison” behavior (controlling mental comparison processes, focusing on one’s own possessions, and cognitive adjustment regarding others’ possessions), and strategies for regulating other components of social comparison (activating reason, managing incoming perceptions, managing outgoing validations while considering the negative consequences of social comparison, reconstructing values, and maintaining realism). This study emphasizes the necessity of countering consumerist culture and providing practical, cognition-based solutions.
